PUC Complaints - Santa Monica Service Problems

Brand X is asking residents of Santa Monica to file PUC complaints about the current unavailability of any kind of DSL service in the western half of our city, between the 10 freeway and San Vicente, between Ocean Ave. and 18th street.

Verizon is currently refusing to serve this area and they refuse to allow anyone else to serve it either.

As a monopoly telephone company, they have a duty to provide reasonable services on demand to anyone who asks. They aren't doing this so people need to complain.

Explanation:

We are currently having problems serving customers in Santa Monica.

Here is the problem as I understand it:

Our area of Santa Monica is served by a "Central Office" which has a number of "DSLAM" devices. There is one port for each DSL line, whether it's from Verizon Online or Brand X or whoever. We aloo use the same telephone lines and DSL ports.

All the DSLAMs in this office are full.

What this means is that nobody in the west half of Santa Monica can get DSL from us or from anyone else.

Verizon bounces all the orders.

You can't get DSL from Verizon or anyone else in this area.

Verizon has made no plans to update or add another DSLAM, even though doing so would cost only a few thousand dollars.

We would be happy to purchase and install our own DSLAM, bu Verizon will not permit this.

When we called Verizon's sales number to ask about this, they said management wanted everyone to sign up for FIOS. This is a dilemma because FIOS is not available in most areasl.

In any case availability of FIOS is of no help if the customer does not want FIOS.

This is really hurting us since about half our customers are in Santa Monica.

This is bad for the public, because they don't have any choices as far as DSL service in this area.

What you can do:

We are taking this up with the Public Utilities Commission.

It would help if you could take a few minutes and fill in their online complaint form, which is located at:

http://www.cpuc.ca.gov/puc/forms/complaints/filecomplaint.htm

It costs nothing, it only takes a few minutes, and a bunch of complaints s often what it takes to motivate Verizon to take action to solve a problem like this.
