Setting up GTE ADSL for Macintosh

Note: Your Macintosh must be capable of accepting 10BaseT ethernet. All Mac's made in the last 5 years have a 10BaseT port. For a couple of years before this, Mac's had AAUI ports built in. You can purchase an AAUI to 10BaseT adapter for about $35. In any case, you must upgrade your Mac to accept 10BaseT ethernet even if it means purchasing a card.

Individual Plan users

When GTE is finished, they will have given you the DSL modem and a cross-over cable that you should connect directly into your Mac's 10BaseT ethernet port. If you intend to hook up DSL to your local area network, please skip below to our setup instructions for Commericial Plan users.

If you would like to share your DSL connection among more than one computer, you must upgrade to our Commericial Plan.

  1. Open your TCP/IP Control Panel.

  2. Go to the Edit menu and select User Mode.

  3. Select the radio button for Advanced.

  4. Click on the OK button.

  5. If you are using a Mac operating system before System 8, then please click on the Info button. Make sure the version of Open Transport is at least 1.1.2. If it is not, please contact us, and we'll instruct you on how to upgrade.

  6. Make your window look like the figure above.

  7. Close the window and save the changes when prompted.

That's it. Your connection should work immediately, however you may have to quit and relaunch any Internet programs such as Netscape that you were using before you made the switch.

Commericial Plan users

Please note: Brand X Tech Support will not offer free support for the setup of your local area network. Support for such setup is available at our usual consulting rates.

When GTE is finished, they will have given you the DSL modem and a cross-over cable. A cross-over cable is only good for connecting a single computer. Do not try to use this cable for your local area network.

  1. Connect the DSL modem to your local area network hub using a standard ethernet cable.

For each computer on your network, do the following:

  2. Open your TCP/IP Control Panel.

  3. Go to the Edit menu and select User Mode.

  4. Select the radio button for Advanced.

  5. Click on the OK button.

  6. If you are using a Mac operating system before System 8, then please click on the Info button. Make sure the version of Open Transport is at least 1.1.2. If it is not, please contact us, and we'll instruct you on how to upgrade.

  7. To the right of IP Address:, please enter one of the static IP addresses we provided you. Please note: Each computer on your network must have a different IP address. Please be very careful to enter the IP address we provided you. If you enter an incorrect address, it may disrupt the network and your connection may need to be temporarily suspended for the benefit of the whole network. So please make sure the numbers match.

  8. To the right of Subnet Mask:, enter the subnet mask we provided you. This should be the same on all of your computers.

  9. To the right of Router address:, enter the Router address (aka Gateway aka Default Route) we gave you.

  10. To the right of Name server addr.:, enter the IP addresses as shown in the figure above.

That's it. Your connection should work immediately, however you may have to quit and relaunch any Internet programs such as Netscape that you were using before you made the switch.

CONFIGURING EUDORA

Eudora is the best Email program around. There are a few who prefer to use Netscape for their mail, but they are considered eccentric. You may use any email program you wish, but our techincal support is limited to programs that are commonly used and that we are familiar with.

You can always obtain the latest version of Eudora by visiting http://www.eudora.com

The instructions below are for the latest Eudora. The oldest version we support is 3.1.3. Click here for the 3.13 instructions.

Please launch Eudora. Eudora might immediately open the settings window or it may not. If it does not, please go to the "Special" menu and select "Settings"

Please follow the steps below. The figures reflect a username of "fred". Please replace this wherever it is shown with your username. (Please note that your username does not include a capital P. That is only used for the login script.). Please use only lowercase letters.

  1. Click on the "Getting Started" icon.

  2. Real name: Enter whatever name you'd like to appear to recepients of your email. Note: You don't have to put in anything if you'd rather be anonymous.

  3. Username: Enter username after replacing username with your actual username. (Please note that your username does not include a capital P. That is only used for the login script.). Please use only lowercase letters.

  4. Mail Host: Enter mail.brandx.net

  5. Return address Enter username@brandx.net after replacing username with your actual username. (Please note that your username does not include a capital P. That is only used for the login script.). Please use only lowercase letters.

  6. Click on the icon for Hosts.

  7. In the text box to the right of SMTP:, please enter mail.brandx.net. Leave the other fields blank.

  8. Scroll down to click on the icon for Sending Mail.

  9. Toward the bottom will be a checkbox entitled Keep copies of outgoing mail. For some strange reason, the default setting for this option is off. Most likely, you will want to retain copies of email you send. If so, please check this box so that it is checked.

  10. Click on the OK button.

You are now ready to send and receive email. You must be logged in to send or receive.

To receive email, please go to the File menu and select Check Mail.

Enter your password. It is the same as your dialup password.

To send mail, please go to the Message menu and select New Message. Fill in the recepient's email address, a subject, and your message. The cc and bcc fields are unnecessary.

For all other features of Eudora, please be aware that Eudora has extensive balloon help. To use balloon help, go to the Help menu (looks like a question mark) and select "Show Balloons". Then simply point to something in Eudora and an explaination will appear. You can turn off balloon help by going back to the Help menu.
