Web Site Creation

Contents

Brand X provides a free 10 megabyte personal web site to every dialup customer. You may also have us host your business site on one of our high speed servers. We also can co-locate your server here at our facility or provide a high speed dedicated connection to your site for maximum control of your server.

The appearance of your web site will say a great deal about you or your company. The Web is perhaps the most remarkable advance in human dissemination of ideas. Not since the Gutenberg press made it possible for every person to have person to have their own bible has such a development occured. Today on the Internet, every single person can publish every thought, every idea, every opinion to everyone on the planet. All this for our low rates!

To have a web site, you will need to write, or have written, the code that will control the appearance of your web site. This code is called hyper text markup language or HTML.

On this page, it is our attempt to provide you with some assistance in writing your own HTML code for your web site. You may find one of the thousand or more books on the subject useful. In addition, there are instructional classes and videos.

If in the end, you determine that for whatever reason, you would rather have someone else create your site, Brand X has web designers that have won nearly every award there is for Web site design. Professional Web site creation can make the difference between a site that people ignore and a site that makes an impression and a sale. We offer highly competitive rates for Web site design. Our designers are well versed in all of the most powerful and latest web technologies (e.g. VRML, Java, Shockwave, Online Databases, Quicktime, streaming video, etc).

A note on support: To maximize the economy of our rates, all of our web hosting rates as well as our free sites come with absolutely no support for site creation. Support questions are limited to placement of files and correct file names. We can only offer such low rates by pricing support separately.

But, please remember that even though we cannot give out free support, we certainly have very reasonable rates for web consulting. Perhaps you just need a few questions answered or would like some advice on how to do something. Please fax or email us with your queries and we'll be happy to provide a reasonable quote for our consulting services.

Software You Need to Get Started

Besides your internet connection, you need several things to build a web site:

All of these programs are either freeware (free to use) or shareware (download for free and pay on the honor system); you can download them from various sites on Internet. We have compiled a list of software sources for your convenience. Other software can be found by using your favorite search engine with the terms "html" and "editor".

Overview of the Web Site Design Process

Here's the general sequence you're going to follow when building a site for the first time:

Documentation on HTML

Check out some of these links to documentation on HTML:

In addition, if you see a page you like, use the "view source" option in Netscape Navigator or Communicator to download a copy of the HTML code for that page. This way you can see how other people have made their page appear.

Things to avoid in designing your Web Site

If this is your first shot at HTML, keep it simple. Don't try to create a search engine or a database. This will only frustrate and discourage you. Start Simple. Get a simple text only page to work. Give it a name. Create some bold text and a headline. Add a picture. Work your way up to a complicated site. Don't try to do everything at once.

Storyboards are good for defining your goal. You might want to start by simply making a page with a picture, a title, and a little body text.

Remember to keep download time in mind.

File names & testing your web site

Please test the site on your computer before uploading it. Use the file menu on your web browser to open the file and make sure it looks correct. It won't look any better on our system than on yours.

When directed to a directory, all browsers look for a file called "index.html". For example, when one goes to "http://www.brandx.net", the file for the page that appears is on our server as "index.html". When you click on the link for our help desk you are taken to "http://www.brandx.net/help". The file for the page that appears is stored in the sub-directory "help" on our server with the name "index.html" First time page creators should avoid having any sub-directories. Simply titled your main page "index.html"

All files you upload must follow proper naming guidelines. All HTML documents must be "filename.html". All GIFs must be "filename.gif". etc. Please use all lowercase.for all of your filenames and directories.

Where Do I Put My Website?

The following only applies to free personal websites. When you signup for a business website, we will provide you with the information on how to access your site and upload your files.

If your username was fred,
this is how your FTP login might look.

Use an FTP program to log into "members.brandx.net" with your username and password. (Please note the "Pusername" is only used for dialing in.) Go to directory "/var/www/docs/user/(your username)". On your FTP program, use the "put" command. On some FTP programs such as WS_FTP you simply click on an arrow icon to send files. HTML files must be transferred as text. Graphics files must be transferred as raw data, not binhex or macbinary.

How Can I And Others See My Site?

Once your files are uploaded, they will be visible to the World Wide Web at "http://members.brandx.net/websites/(your username)". Example: http://members.brandx.net/websites/fred

Troubleshooting

These are some of the most common problems when building web sites.

Your directory doesn't exist. We try to set these up at the same time as when we put you online, but it's possible that your free website wasn't setup. If so, please contact us and we'll set it up as soon as possible.

File not found, 404 error. This means that the filename you specified is not where you specified that it would be. Here are the most common causes:
