Dialing into Brand X Internet's 56k service with a Macintosh
To use Brand X's 56k service, you must be using Open Transport.
Open Transport is the newer, and far superior networking protocol that
Apple introduced several years ago. All Macs running System 8 or later
use Open Transport.
You can tell which networking protocol you are using by checking your
Control Panels folder. You will have either "MacTCP" (which means you
are using Classic Networking) or "TCP/IP" (which means you are using
Open Transport). Open Transport is automatically installed with System
8 and with all PCI based Macs. Brand X recommends upgrading to Open
Transport. We have nevertheless provided instructions on how to
configure your Mac using Classic Networking.
If you are using System 7, then it is important that you upgrade to the
latest version of Open Transport. There are serious bugs in earlier
versions.
OT/PPP is the dialing program that comes with Apple's OS (versions 7.6
to 8.1). In version 8.5 and later OT/PPP was renamed Remote Access.
Some of the windows were rearranged; however all of the same options in
our instructions apply. Your windows will simply look slightly
different.
Many people prefer to use FreePPP because of its enchanced features.
Brand X recommends using FreePPP, but you may use any dialing program you
wish with Brand X.
